Who should I hire to build my garage conversion in Los Angeles? Should I hire a remodeler or general contractor?

To answer this question, you must first understand the role of both the remodeler and general contractor and their responsibilities to Los Angeles Homeowners. The general contractor is the person legally liable for the entire project. The general contractor is also the person in charge of the administration and construction parts of building your garage conversion. In regards to the remodeler, they are the right-hand man of the general contractor. They are construction workers who generally have years of experience under their belt and particularly housing construction.  The biggest difference between the two are going to come down to insurance and price. A remodeler is typically going to cost about 5,000-10,000 less than the contractor. A remodeler though is not legally responsible for the project, nor the administration work. That would fall to you. The remodeler could get insurance but it is going to cost you more.  Your general contractor is the all in one package.  In the end, it comes down to what is important to you, has everything done and not having to worry or saving a little in your budget?
