Entry Step Codes – Los Angeles Contractor

Have you recently purchased a home in Los Angeles? Or maybe you are looking to do a remodel? Or maybe you decided it was time to convert your garage or build an ADU and save up money for your dream of buying your own beach. Whatever the reason, you've clicked this link, which means it's time to talk steps.

Steps, you may ask? No not steps to do something but the steps you need to reach your home.  Although I am going to list the steps you need to take to ensure your steps are up to code.

Almost all current building codes state that entry steps, the steps that lead into your Los Angeles home, need to start out with footings, The last thing you want to see is your entry steps pulling away from your home or sinking, either which are not good for you or your home. This is not a cartoon and the last thing anyone would want is for you or a family member to lose their footing and get hurt. Issues with your steps can occur for many reasons, the most popular being improperly installed, water being caught, or worse foundation issues. Proper installation and maintenance will keep your steps long-lasting.

Entry Step Footings General Contractor

Properly installed and building code approved footings must be at least 42 inches in depth and the material type can be blocked, poured concrete wall or post. For the landing of the steps, you must have at least 36 inches from where it lies adjacent to the house all the way out to the first step. Ever had to back down a step or two to get the door open when your hands are full? Well, you will appreciate the space when that happens, bigger is better! At least in this case.

Need ADA Compliant Steps at your Los Angeles home?

We can help with that! It's as easy as adding step risers and tread. A front entry step that is up to code is no higher than 7 ¾ inches. The front part of your entry step, the thread, has to be 10 inches minimum and all be uniformed, to ensure there is no uneven ground.

Fun facts to remember:

  1. Entry steps need a 2% slope away from your home so in times of water it won't run towards but away from your Los Angeles home.

  2. If you have more than 3 risers a hand railing is required.
